Holding my first ever oil painting

I can hardly believe that Lyn Lasneski, my teacher and painter extraordinaire was able to persuade me to take one of her oil painting workshops last year. My intention was really to learn more about how she teaches and works with her students in order to try to be of assistance to her in her business. I love business, and when things are slow real estate, what better way to stay sharp than to help some other entrepreneur. To my surprise, my less than excited approach to this small painting may have helped me. I wasn’t after a great painting, so worked carefully, but quickly. I didn’t think I could really do much since this was my first painting in 40 years, and certainly my first attempt with oil. I didn’t engage in my usual perfectionistic approach. Lyn said it was a good way to paint, and in the end I was quite pleased with what I was able to do. But, then again, Lyn is one fantastic teacher….

No, really. She’s a fabulous painter. I bought several of her paintings, and they are hanging on my walls at home and in my office. But her skill at teaching is truely amazing. I’d not painted anything for over 40 years — not since high school. And I’ve never worked with oil. I had to borrow supplies and brushes–not thinking this was going to go anywhere. But in the end I was quite pleased. And I have to thank Lyn for doing a great job.

So what do you do with another piece of wall art? You give it to your grown son for father’s day of course. He appreciated the fact that it was from his mom, and now I don’t have to find a place to hang it. But I am going to paint again. This was fun and quite satisfying.

Check out Lyn’s website and blog for more information about where her next workshops are going to be held. Often in Vancouver, WA or in Depoe Bay, OR. Or if you want to hold a show of her work in your home for your friends, contact her directly. This can be a lot of fun for everyone.

Beautiful and silent, the snowstorm in December stopped traffic and slowed the pace of life for us all.  A walk around my neighborhood revealed some beautiful scenes.
